The Voice in My Head: A Lifetime of Misidentification
For over four decades, I navigated life under a profound misconception. I mistakenly believed that the incessant voice in my head was the essence of my being. Whenever I referred to “me,” I was actually referring to this internal dialogue. Every thought that crossed my mind, I claimed as my own, declaring, “I am thinking.” There were times when the barrage of negative thoughts became so overwhelming that I felt on the brink of insanity. Little did I know that I was blindly following a false guide, completely unaware that this voice was not, in fact, my true self.
The Awakening: Discovering the Observer Within
A transformative awakening occurred a few years ago, revealing a startling truth: the voice in my head is not me. It’s baffling how this realization eluded me for so long. The epiphany came with a simple yet profound understanding – if I could hear these thoughts, if I was aware of them, how could I possibly be those very thoughts? It’s a logical impossibility to simultaneously be the observer and the observed. If you can hear something, how can you be that very thing at the same time?
Consciousness: The True Self Behind the Thoughts
This revelation led to a crucial question: If I am not the thoughts in my head, then who is the one listening to them? Who is the one aware of these thoughts? The answer lies in consciousness itself. The true self is the conscious entity that exists before any thought materializes. This separation between thoughts and consciousness had always been there, but I had never focused on it, assuming I was both my thoughts and my consciousness intertwined.
The Matrix of Thinking: A Thought Experiment
My teacher, RJ Spina, offers an intriguing thought experiment: Imagine your eyes are disconnected from your brain. In this state, you’re fully conscious of everything you see, but thinking is impossible. This scenario illustrates a profound truth – thinking is the matrix, the very mechanism through which humanity is controlled. Until we awaken to this trap and realize we can function on this planet without constant thinking, we remain under the influence of external narratives.
The Programmable Mind: Breaking Free from Conditioning
The voice in your head is essentially a background program running in your subconscious. What I never realized before is that this program can be deprogrammed and reprogrammed at will. From birth, we absorb and form our programming from various sources – parents, school, clergy, grandparents, teachers, friends, and so on. We’ve been following this programming, listening to the voice in our heads and mistakenly identifying with it.
The Power of Identification: Choosing Your True Identity
Identification is the key concept here. Whatever you identify with, you become. But here’s the liberating truth: you don’t have to identify with the voice in your head. Recognizing that this voice is not you, and understanding that you are a spirit being experiencing Earth in a limited body, can help you identify as consciousness itself. You are consciousness. You are the one who is conscious of this world. You are not OF this world, but here to experience it.
Beyond the Physical: Insights from Near-Death Experiences
Thousands of people who have had Near Death Experiences (NDEs) have reported being fully conscious without the fear-based thoughts of the mind and body upon leaving their physical forms. This suggests a deeper truth about our nature.
The Heart’s Wisdom: Intuition vs. Mental Chatter
There’s a knowing that comes from deep within, often described as intuition. It doesn’t stem from the mind but emanates from the heart, the center of your being. It’s a knowing that surpasses understanding – the “unction,” the nudging, the leading of Spirit. This knowing transcends worldly knowledge or understanding.
Spirit-Led Living: Embracing Consciousness Over Thought
In essence, you have a choice: to be led by your head or by your spirit. If you’re thinking, you’re in your head. If you’re not thinking and instead following your inner “knower,” you’re on the right track.
Conclusion: A Journey of Awakening
This blog post barely scratches the surface of this profound subject. I do a much better job explaining it in my course Why Am I Here? I’m aware it may trigger skepticism in many, but for those who have experienced an awakening, these words will resonate deeply. They will know exactly what I’m talking about.
